East Kentwood, Mich. – The Grandville Women’s Water Polo team picked up a 5-4 win in the West Regional 3rd Place Game over the West Ottawa Panthers on Saturday, May 19 at East Kentwood High School.
“Happy to get the win, we scored a few late to salt it away and I was really happy we got composed late in the ballgame to make that happen,” Head Coach Mitch Fountain said.
Five different Bulldogs scored in the game, with senior captain Julia Veenkamp, senior Emily Anglim, juniors Carolyn Peterson and Sammy DeYoung as well as sophomore Chloe Graverson all picking up a goal.
Peterson scored in the fourth quarter for the second time in as many victories for the Bulldogs on what eventually stood as the game-winning goal.
“Both ends of the pool, this was Pete’s best weekend of the year,” Assistant Coach Harrison Watt said. “She was tough as nails in center defender against a really physically strong center, and scored another big goal. Absolutely what we need, when we needed it.”
Peterson also contributed three steals and a drawn exclusion in the game. Julia Veenkamp had three steals and an assist, while Graverson added two steals and two assists.
In net, senior captain Rachel Veenkamp made 13 stops in the game.
“She made a lot of big saves this weekend,” Coach Watt said. “She made one as time expired to save the win that I was very proud of. She read it like a book.”
The Bulldogs clinched the third seed out of the West Region, and will face the loser of the East Regional Championship between Ann Arbor Huron High School and Grand Ledge High School as the second seed out of the East Region.
Game time is to be determined on Friday, June 1 at Saline High School.
