Grandville, Mich. – The Michigan Water Polo Association’s (MWPA) second ranked Grandville women’s water polo team won 14-2 in OK Conference play over the East Grand Rapids High School Pioneers on Thursday, April 12.
Senior captain Julia Veenkamp scored six times on six shots on goal to pace the Bulldog offensive attack. Six different Bulldogs factored into the scoring. Sophomore Chloe Graverson scored three times, while junior Sammy DeYoung had two goals.
Senior captain Alyssa Potyraj, senior Emily Anglim and sophomore Lucy Baker also added a goal apiece.
“It might sound a little contrite but it was a little ugly for that kind of a score,” Head Coach Mitch Fountain said. “That’s encouraging that we can still build off of a win like that.”
The Bulldogs had 24 steals in the game to just nine turnovers. DeYoung and senior captain and goaltender Rachel Veenkamp led the Bulldogs with four steals apiece.
Rachel Veenkamp made eight saves and had an assist in the contest.
“I thought she was pretty sound. One of the goals was a little fluky, but she made all of the correct reads,” Assistant Coach Harrison Watt said. “It’s funny, she’s so smart, she tries to see every single outcome of every play. We’ve talked about keeping it simple. She simply played with personality and edge. Love it.”
Junior Carolyn Peterson found her footing in her second game back in the line up and tallied four assists and three steals with two drawn kickouts for Grandville.
The Bulldogs outshot the Pioneers 19-10 in the contest.
Grandville sets to play #3 Rockford at the Jenison Varsity/JV Invite on Friday at 4:30 pm at Jenison High School.
