Game Recap

The Grandville Hockey Team 41 wrapped up their first competitive weekend of the seasons with a solid performance vs. defending Div. 2 State Champion Romeo. It was a solid game played by both teams. Romeo opened up the scoring first at 10:34 of the first period on an impressive power play goal. Not to be outdone, Team 41 countered with :24 remaining with an equally impressive power play goal of their own, Adam Karbowski one-timed one past the Romeo goalie, set up by David Breazeale and Zach Tykocki.

Like the first period the Bulldog teams traded goals, first Team 41 took the lead @ 13:40 on a 2v1 situation where Shane Haggerty swiftly passed the puck over to Bryce Cassel who quickly released his shot to score his first goal as a Bulldog. Romeo then countered at 4:30 leaving the score tied and game to be decided in the 3rd period.

Although both teams had a number of opportunities for the majority of the 3rd period it was Team 41 who steadily began to control the energy, tempo and puck possession of the game, demonstrating a key Bulldog Hockey trait of grinding down opponents late in games. At 6:55, Zach Tyckoki scored a quickly fed pass to the slot by Trevor Gelfius, followed less than two minutes later by senior and first year member Jordan Root, who banged home a feeding net-front pass from Shane Haggerty and Bryce Cassell, for Jordan’s first Bulldog goal. Yet the Romeo Bulldogs were not done, they responded as you would expect a defending state champion to respond and with 1:47 remaining put the puck past Team 41 goaltender Alex Whitman in a net-front scrum. Now with just a goal separating the two Bulldog Teams, Team 41 showed their GRIT, doubling down defensively, neutralizing a 6v5 situation and sealing a victory with an open-net goal by Trevor Gelfius and a weekend sweep of two Metro-Detroit powers, Romeo and on Friday Utica Eisenhower.

Senior Alex Whitman earned the win for Team 41 with solid and steady performance in net, facing 18 shots from Romeo.

The Bulldogs next game is this Saturday, November 26 at home (Georgetown Ice Center) at 5pm.

Following Team 41’s first home game of the 2016-17 campaign, there will be a Skate-with-the-Dawgs event. Team 41 welcomes all to participate in this fun open skating event with Team 41.
